Every project starts the same way - with a lot of questions. These are the ones we hear most often, and the ones worth thinking through before your first conversation with Solstice.
How do I determine my project’s goals and vision?
You don't have to have it completely figured out before reaching out to Solstice, or even before engaging our team for architectural design services. That's part of what the design process is for.
That said, might we offer a helpful exercise to do before reaching out to really any architect or designer you’re considering connecting with: grab a pen and paper, open a voice memo, or just start a note on your phone and brain dump. What excites you about this project? What drives you crazy about your current spaces? What have you seen in other homes or spaces that stopped you in your tracks? What would you never want to give up? What do you want to spend, and what is your timeline? There are no wrong answers and nothing is too small to mention.
From there, we will work with you to uncover both the potential and the constraints of your project.
What does my budget need to account for?
Your budget needs to cover more than construction. Architecture fees, structural engineering, interior design, landscape design, planning and HOA approvals, permitting and development fees, and contingency all belong in the number too, though not every project requires all of these and we can help you determine what applies to yours. Before reaching out, it helps to have a rough sense of what you are willing to invest, both in construction and in design. Architectural design services are a meaningful investment, and the right fit happens when both sides are aligned on what the project can realistically support. Once we have a clear understanding of your project we can provide a proposal that outlines where design fees will land. Throughout the design process, we will work with you and your contractor to do our best to keep your project within the established budget.
What do I need to know about my project’s site or existing home?
Quite a bit, actually. Zoning regulations, setbacks, lot coverage limits, easements, soil conditions, utility locations and solar orientation all shape what's buildable before a single design decision is made. At Solstice, this is something we navigate regularly across Salt Lake City, Southeast Ohio, and the surrounding areas. Ask us about that one time the location of a leaning power pole changed everything. Actually, don't, unless you're ready for a long story. When you initially reach out, don’t worry if you don’t have all of this gathered - the site address and any known surveying is a good starting point.
How long is this going to take?
Longer than most people expect, and that's okay. Whenever possible, a little breathing room between the start of design and your target completion date makes a real difference. A well-resolved project takes time to get right. Rushing design to save time almost always costs more in the end. We'd rather slow down on paper than on site. We typically recommend somewhere between 6-12 months for design and permitting depending on the specifics of your project.
How does Solstice keep in touch throughout the process?
Consistently and transparently. This is something we've been told sets our approach apart. You should always know where your project stands, what decisions are coming and who to reach out to with questions. We work through email, text, phone call and a mix of digital and in-person meetings depending on the design phase and the project.
When in the process of a project should I bring on an architect?
As early as possible. The earlier we're involved, the more we can shape a project that works for your site, your budget and your goals and vision. Early involvement in new home construction planning and remodel or addition work is consistently one of the highest-value decisions a homeowner can make. The same is true for business owners and developers pursuing commercial and multi-unit projects. We're well-connected to a range of trusted professionals: interior designers, landscape architects, structural and civil engineers, MEP consultants, and builders, and can help you put together the right team from the start.
