A village-scale housing project rooted in community, healing, and design.
Horizons Housing is a six-unit cottage development in the Appalachian village of Glouster, Ohio. Commissioned by two deeply committed organizations, Survivor Advocacy Outreach Program (SAOP) and Hocking Athens Perry Community Action (HAPCAP), the project brings together four small-scale buildings across two adjacent parcels. Each unit ranges from 900 to 1,000 square feet and is arranged around shared courtyards that offer a sense of openness, safety, and connection.
The goal is to create housing that actively supports the recovery journey. SAOP works to empower survivors of domestic violence with advocacy, resources, and shelter. HAPCAP focuses on addressing poverty and strengthening communities through housing and economic development. This project reflects their shared mission through a design approach that is wellness-driven, trauma-informed, and rooted in long-term sustainability.
The homes are designed to be all electric and net-zero energy ready. Their layout supports clear sightlines, intuitive circulation, and communal outdoor space that feels protected without being closed off. These are cottage homes designed to offer both privacy and belonging.
Schematic design is complete, but the project is currently on hold due to a pause in federal funding. The project team remains deeply committed to seeing it move forward and welcomes support from those who share the vision.
