The Kaysville Residence is a remodel and small addition to a mid-century home in Kaysville, Utah. The design focused on improving energy performance, spatial function, and the home’s connection to its unique backyard site. Solstice Design Studio approached the project with a process shaped by spatial problem-solving, building science and design empathy.

From the beginning, the goals were clear: a more functional layout, a welcoming presence, and a structure that could better use both their resources and the planet’s. Thermal comfort, energy efficiency, and longevity were core priorities.

The project is a full remodel of the existing 1,100 square foot home, with a modest addition and a new two-car garage. The original structure, a variation on the classic Wasatch Front mid-century modern, had a layout suited for another era. But how we use space evolves, and the clients were ready to evolve with it. They added square footage with purpose, shaped around how they live now and how they imagine living next. The design shifts the home toward the present, the future, and the incredible backyard that anchors it.

That backyard is a gem. Full of gambel oak, native grasses, and wildflowers, it steps down into a rare gulley - an oasis in the suburban fabric. Especially now, when every remaining pocket of green land feels at risk, this one still has space to breathe.

Throughout the project, we have returned to the original constraints and goals again and again. Through each design iteration, into construction documents, and through permitting. Construction is currently well underway.
