A reimagining of a 1950s bungalow for modern life and multi-generational living.

This project began with a cottage-style home on a quiet street in Athens, Ohio. The house had charm, good bones, and a strong sense of place, but like many homes of its era, it wasn’t built for how people live today and was ready for some updates to the flow, systems and structures within its walls.

The Owner came to the project with a clear goal: to breathe new life into the home while honoring its original character and its role within the surrounding neighborhood.

The project includes a substantial renovation of the existing structure and an addition of approximately 2,080 square feet. On the main level, the plan opens up with a new kitchen, dining, and living area, creating more space and better flow for everyday life. Above, a new primary suite provides a private retreat. A new attached garage is paired with an apartment above it, offering flexibility for guests, future rental income, or extended family.

The project also brings a strong performance upgrade, using SIPS panelized construction for the addition, along with energy retrofits: air sealing, insulation upgrades, and all new windows support both comfort and long-term energy efficiency.

Throughout design, the focus has been on thoughtful growth. Expanding in ways that feel intentional, cohesive, and enduring. It’s a remodel that respects what’s here while making space for what comes next.

The project is currently under construction.
