Work Hive is a locally owned coworking community that has been a fixture in downtown Salt Lake City since 2012. When the Work Hive team decided to move headquarters to 56 East Broadway, they chose a building with a story.

Originally built in 1909 as the Mission Theater, the space later became the beloved Keith O'Brien department store before sitting through decades of change in the heart of downtown. The bones were good. The history was rich. The opportunity was real!

Solstice came on to provide focused architectural services for the retrofit, navigating the specific challenges of bringing a historic commercial building into compliance for a modern office and coworking use. Our scope included permit drawings, accessibility requirements, and life safety compliance. The project was designed with a phased approach, allowing Work Hive room to grow into the space over time.

Existing glazing was retained and incorporated into new office and conference configurations, keeping the historic fabric intact where it counted most.
